Exploring Artisan Ecosystems:  Potter Eric Lokossou @ WA_Bénin festival

Allow me to share an insightful journey into the world of contemporary craftsmanship, particularly within the context of West and Central Africa. During a visit to Benin, I delved into the heart of Sè, a region renowned for housing generations of skilled potters.

Amidst this community, I encountered a potter's family, making their living from this age-old craft. Among them, Eric Lokossou, a seasoned potter, caught my attention. Working on his family land alongside his wife and mother—who passed down her expertise through generations.

In the first week of August 2023, the Wa_Benin Festival celebrated the essence of "Art and Traditional Know-How of Benin." A key highlight was a discussion titled "Traditional Beninese Art: Its Value for Local Communities and the Diaspora." The festival reached out to me for an artisan connection and I introduced them to Eric. He shared his practice, insights, and history, alongside Christelle Akué, a Cultural Project Manager specializing in supporting visual artists, and journalist Kinoss DOSSOU. The online conversation was expertly moderated by Martial Tchegnon and remains available on the festival’s public pages.

This narrative seamlessly intertwines my expertise, research journey, and the impactful connection I facilitated between the festival and makers.
